SPIROMETRY TESTING PROGRAM
Patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), asthma,
and other lung diseases are among the frequent users of the healthcare
system. COPD accounted for 8 million trips to a doctor’s office
or outpatient department in 2000. That same year, an estimated 10
million U.S. adults reported having physician-diagnosed COPD. In
addition, the disease has emerged as the fourth leading cause of
death in the United States for those over age 45. The estimated
cost of treating COPD exceeds
$23 billion each year.
Asthma, another common lung disease, was responsible for 10.4 million
visits to physicians’ offices and hospital clinics in 2000.
More than a third of the 24 million Americans who have asthma are
children, making it the most common chronic childhood disease. The
estimated annual cost of treating asthma, which results in nearly
5,000 deaths each year, is more than $8 billion.
Screening and monitoring treatment effectiveness is essential to
properly manage patients with known or suspected lung disease. Clinical
practice guidelines published by the Global Initiative for Chronic
Obstructive Lung Disease (GOLD) and the National Institutes of Health
recommend spirometry testing for patients suffering from COPD and
Asthma.
